Answer Your Calling
By: Destiny Copeland
People are complex and full of many interests, talents, and desires. One person could be into fashion, cooking, helping others, or writing. Still there is always one thing people love over everything else. We think about it, dream about it, but still stray away from it. This is our calling, and we shouldn’t ignore it.
Sometimes our calling may be something that seems impractical. For me it was art. I originally wanted to go to an art school in New York to become a graphic designer. My parents were usually supportive of all my wild dreams, but this was one they couldn’t accept. They said, “Don’t do that, you’ll be broke” and “I know too many graphic designers that are struggling.” At sixteen I decided to ignore my passion and listen to my parents’ seemingly better judgment.
Now, in my junior year, I wish I didn’t listen to them. I wish they would have encouraged me to learn how to use the Adobe Creative Suite and practice my craft. But even more, I wish I would have listened to myself. The older I get I realize that my parents aren’t always right. As much as they want what’s best for me they can never truly know what is best, only I can.
For anyone who feels like there’s some talent or desire they’re ignoring, stop. Let your thoughts guide you and start to work on your craft as much as you can. Also, don’t limit yourself to just one. Why do you think I write for this magazine? Begin to believe in your desires and put them into action. Your passions are a call that should not be ignored.
